When a person is asked about what they know about a school, may it be primary or tertiary level, they would easily define a school through their color, mascot, team name, and even their location. Some would even know a school if the school has a rivalry with another school or if it is considered an Ivy League class institution. However, there are tendencies and instances wherein people would know if a person came from a specific university through their uniform. Sometimes people, especially young students, would complain about the school uniform policies as it could be considered a traditional or an old school custom that must be replaced as the modern period now offers a variety of fashionable clothing that would not hamper learning. However, considering the prices and the common connotations on various types of casual clothing available for students, it presents a dilemma on most families who could not afford these clothing and s negative impact on a school. Having students wear student uniforms promotes unity, distinction, safety, self-confidence, and affordability that could improve a student’s overall performance in school.
First and foremost, school uniforms are a much more suitable choice as an alternative for everyday school wear instead of purchasing high ended or casual clothing for students to use while going to school. Since school uniforms would roughly be half or less in cost as compared to a signature pair of jeans and tees, parents would be able to save the money for other school needs or expenses they would need at home. Some schools would even give out uniforms for free, which would be beneficial for students and parents as they would not spend a dime in purchasing non-school sanctioned uniforms. While many students would find it boring, having school uniforms would no longer have themselves competing against each other as to who has the best signature look or new clothing each day. They would no longer keep on competing as they would all look the same and their uniforms would put them on top of the rest as it would also reflect the school they represent, and in some cases, their image.
Aside from this, school uniforms promote school unity and community, allowing students to mingle and identify themselves within the school. The uniforms would allow students to stand up from the rest and become their signature look, especially when representing their universities or schools to competitions and events. Uniforms would also be beneficial when it comes to emphasize distinction. Not only would uniforms allow students to stand up from other students as their uniforms would showcase the school’s colors and people’s perseceptions over it, it would also allow people to report any type of crime and easily direct them to students from a particular school based on their uniforms alone. This benefit would also cater to the school and allow them to sort out their student communities and remove any bad influence. Uniforms would also be keep students safe. Since students would be asked to wear uniforms, any outsider who would step in the school would easily be spotted. Uniforms could also include policies on the dress code, disabling gangs and similar groups from tarnishing their uniforms for the sake of their membership in these groups. Finally, since students would no longer need to purchase high end clothing and concentrate on their looks, students wearing their uniforms would no longer need to concentrate on competing, they could now direct their focus to their school works. Since uniforms, albeit only has a few styles depending on the school’s affiliation or traits, it would give students the chance to become confident of themselves and how they carry these uniforms. Eventually, once they manage this fact, students can easily compete without worrying of tarnishing their school’s reputation and still maintain their personal image. These benefits on school uniforms outweigh the negative connotations on having them, making it an excellent choice to improve student performance, unity and image.
